Constantin John is a multi instrumentalist and sound designer who works mostly in theatrical contexts. His main interest lies in the immersive possibilities of these multimedia settings and the merging of composition and atmospheric sound design to create auditory stage spaces that also tell stories themselves.

Constantin studied theater studies, comparative literature and art history before working as an assistant dramaturg at Residenztheater in Munich. Here he created his first performances and theater works, in which he was involved as a dramaturg, musician and performer, and which attempted to merge the fields of spoken theater and sound installation.

He has been working as a freelance musician since 2017 and has since been involved in numerous theater productions at Residenztheater Munich, Schauspiel Frankfurt, Staatstheater Nürnberg, Staatstheater Kassel, Schauspiel Leipzig and many more. The production “WOYZECK | MARIE” has been nominated for the shortlist of the 2024 Theatertreffen. His film scores for short films have appeared at Filmfest Hamburg, Burg Hülshoff – Centre for Literature (Münster), Underdox Munich or Schirn Kunsthalle Frankfurt.

As a solo artist, he released his debut album TRANSFORM on the Nuremberg based label VeryDeepRecords in April 2022. A highly produced and ambitious record blending his love for field recordings, analog instruments such as piano or cello, with a modern dance music production and approach. A year later, on November 30th, an EP followed, that still focussed a lot on textures – hence the name – but just used an organ, a monophonic semi-modular synthesizer and effect pedals.

In recent years he reconnected with the guitar, an instrument that once offered him great freedom after years of classical piano practice, but which he abandoned later when he focused on electronic music. Nowadays he blends the guitar with his electronic productions and experimental approaches and explores the sonic possibilities of the instrument not just in traditional ways but with different tunings, playing styles and modifications.
